Pappu charu is a popular South Indian lentil soup or rasam. It is made with toor dal (split pigeon peas), tamarind, and a variety of spices. Pappu charu is typically served with rice, but it can also be enjoyed as a standalone soup.

Pappu Charu Recipe Ingredients

  • 1 cup toor dal (split pigeon peas)
  • 1/2 cup tamarind paste
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/4 teaspoon hing (asafoetida)
  • 1/4 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon curry leaves
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • Salt to taste

Lets prepare Pappu Charu Recipe step by step

  1. Rinse the toor dal and soak it in water for at least 30 minutes.
  2. In a pressure cooker, combine the toor dal, tamarind paste, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, garam masala, hing, mustard seeds, curry leaves, oil, and salt.
  3. Add 3 cups of water to the pressure cooker and close the lid.
  4. Put in Pressure cook for 3 whistles.
  5. Once the pressure has released naturally, open the lid and mash the dal with a spoon.
  6. If the dal is too thick, add more water and bring it to a simmer.
  7. Serve hot with rice.
