Prawn Curry Recipe Ingredients

  • 500 grams prawns, cleaned and deveined
  • 1 tablespoon tamarind paste
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit lengthwise
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 inch ginger, grated
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • Salt to taste
  • Cilantro leaves, for garnish
  • Curry leaves, for garnish (optional)

Steps to prepare Prawn

  1. Marinate the prawns: In a bowl, combine the tamarind paste with 1 tablespoon of water and set aside. Mix the prawns with 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder, 1/4 teaspoon red chili powder, and salt. Keep aside for 15 minutes.
  2. Temper the oil: Heat coconut oil in a pan over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
  3. Build the flavor base: Add the onion, green chilies, garlic, and ginger. Saute until the onion becomes translucent.
  4. Spice it up: Add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala. Saute for 30 seconds, releasing the fragrance.
  5. Simmer the sauce: Add the tamarind water and coconut milk. Season with salt and bring to a simmer.
  6. Star of the show: Add the prawns and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until they turn opaque and pink. Do not overcook.
  7. Garnish and serve: Garnish with fresh cilantro and curry leaves (optional). Serve hot with rice or naan bread.
