Spiced Jowar Puffs, also known as sorghum pops, are a nutritious and versatile snack. They’re made from puffed sorghum grains, offering a light and crunchy texture with a slightly sweet flavor.
Spiced Jowar Puffs Ingredients
- 2 cups jowar
- 1 tablespoon oil
- ½ teaspoon red chili powder
- ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- Roasted peanuts (optional)
- Chopped curry leaves (optional)
Steps to prepare Spiced Jowar puffs
- Wash and dry the jowar: Rinse the jowar thoroughly under running water and drain well. Spread it on a clean cloth and let it air dry completely for at least 30 minutes.
- Pop the jowar: Heat a heavy-bottomed pan over medium heat. Add the jowar in a single layer, ensuring no grains overlap. Cover the pan with a loose-fitting lid, leaving a small gap for steam to escape. The jowar will start popping within a few minutes.
- Regulate the heat: Adjust the flame occasionally to maintain medium heat and prevent burning. Gently shake the pan to ensure even popping. The popping should subside within 5-7 minutes.
- Cool the jowar: Transfer the popped jowar to a large bowl and let it cool completely.
- Make the spice mix: In a separate bowl, mix the red chili powder, turmeric powder, and salt to your desired taste.
- Flavor the jowar: Add the oil to a pan and heat it slightly. Roast the peanuts for a few minutes until golden brown, adding curry leaves for an extra flavor boost if desired. Turn off the heat.
- Combine and serve: Add the cooled jowar pops to the pan and mix well with the oil, roasted peanuts, and spice mix. Ensure everything is evenly coated.
- Serve immediately: Enjoy the spiced jowar puffs as a snack or sprinkle them over salads or soups for added texture and flavor.
